I know that most of the videos I shoot at the gym make the moves look relatively effortless, which is due to the fact that I’ve been going to the gym regularly for over a decade at this point. I’ve done more squats, burpees, lunges etc. than I could count so those moves are pretty well polished. That being said, I do enjoy when I encounter a move that does not come easily to me. It is fun to have a challenge to tackle. Today’s kettlebell workout was my second run through for this particular workout and I was lucky enough to be the only person in class. This meant that I could take the time to really focus on mastering the Turkish get up press. The goal is to rise up onto one leg with your bottom hovering just off the ground while performing presses. As you can see, my first attempts were not pretty. In fact, I wasn’t even able to get fully off the ground.

After attempting it with weights and failing, I did the modification that doesn’t involved balancing on one leg off the ground. I wasn’t satisfied, however, to stop there. Since I was the only person in class, I asked the trainer to help me get off the ground. I moved the foot of my bent leg in closer to my butt and removed the kettlebells from the equation. By making these simple adjustments, I was able to get up on one leg and press. I still plan to work on this move until it’s more fluid and I’m able to add weight, but I’m proud of myself for getting the basic move down.
